From ‘Time Out’ to ‘Time In’ When Supporting Dysregulated Behaviour

Removing a child or young person from a situation when they’re becoming dysregulated is familiar practice for anyone working in education or social care settings.

Traditionally this might take the form of a ‘time out’ – leaving a child or young person alone until they appear ready to return to an activity. But, would moving from a ‘time out’ to a ‘time in’ approach be more effective for behaviour support?

Join Principal Team Teach trainer, Ali Manning, as she discusses how can we use time away from an activity in a purposeful way, to co-regulate, reconnect, and rebuild relationships. By doing so, Ali explains how this becomes a meaningful de-escalation strategy that creates long term change for the children and young people we support.

We’ll be discussing:

  • What we mean by ‘time in’ when supporting dysregulated children and young people and how this differs from ‘time out’
  • Practical ways to support co-regulation that can lead to effective self-regulation strategies
  • Ideas to structure ‘time in’ to make it effective and manageable for everyone

This webinar is suitable for professionals working with children and young people and will last for approximately 30 minutes.
