Trauma-Informed Approaches and Maintaining Boundaries | Haydn Mansell

Published On: 22 January 2025
In this episode, Clare talks to Advanced Team Teach trainer and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention trainer, Haydn Mansell, about trauma-informed approaches and maintaining boundaries.

They talk about what is meant by trauma-informed approaches, and how trauma can affect children and young people. They also discuss challenges around balancing important boundaries and expectations with continuing to offer trauma-informed support.

Alongside being a trainer, Haydn is Acting Principal at Albany Secondary Education Support Centre in Western Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Psychology and Graduate Diploma in Education, and over the course of his professional career, he has developed an extensive understanding of trauma, complex behaviour, education, and developmental disabilities.

You can find Haydn on LinkedIn.

He also shares three tips during the episode:

  • Be curious. Take the time to look beyond the behaviour, to identify all of the contributory factors and understand what is driving it.
  • Try to put yourself in “someone else’s shoes” to better understand their perspective. This might include the young person, family members or external support agencies.
  • Collaborate and be flexible; there is no one-size-fits-all solution to complex situations.
